Shikany, Wynwood. It’s where you want to go.

If you’re like me always searching for something new; a mind-blowing culinary experience, or for someone to hold your hand and take you down the rabbit hole…. You want to go to Shikany in Wynwood.

Recently I was lucky enough to try this place but I honestly had no idea what I was getting myself into.

First of all, it’s in a section of Wynwood and the place itself is very understated. But as soon as you open the door, you will see the effortlessly cool and relaxed floor concept. There is also a very nice tasting table. The ambiance is just great overall.

Shikany has a classic modern vibe and an inviting open kitchen, really making you feel like you are part of the experience.

Gabriel, my server, made quite the impression on me. When I told him I was curious about Shikany’s molecular food dishes his eyes opened up and he enthusiastically explained absolutely everything with great knowledge.

“Molecular gastronomy is about the five sense,” said Gabriel.

It really is more than just delicious food. It’s about the presentation, and the intriguing craft of expertly creating dishes that sound like they may contradict each other but are actually indulgently fabulous.

I started out with drinks (naturally), and Gabriel brought me a beautiful sphereized watermelon cocktail. It is as cool as it looks in real life and yes, it’s good.

Here’s a dehydrated tomato flake with cucumber gel, dehydrated salmon flakes and Chardonnay foam. I really wish I had more of these because it was like nothing I had ever tried before, and that is what Shikany is about. New and exciting flavors? Yes, bring it!

Next we had the absolutely genius smoked Gouda. Wagyu. Croquettes. Yes. This is an actual thing. And they are so damn good. With dark chocolate-covered foie gras spheres (perfection), apple-cured duck breast prosciutto (similar taste and texture as regular prosciutto but you can tell it’s different). Order two of these. Per person. Thank me later.

My other favorites include the nori tuna tartare macaroons. The tartare was excellent and the macaroons were ever-so-slightly sweet although they were made from seaweed. This dish was perfectly balanced. Actually order extra of these, you can’t just have three that’s absolutely ridiculous.

I was also lucky enough to try the foie gras torchon (heavenly) with the drunken banana bread pudding. This one was a must order!

As for the main course, I was recommended the halibut with the vanilla parsnip purΓ©e. It is something else! There are a lot of flavors in this dish that do not overwhelm but compliment each other perfectly.

I must confess I did try one of their special oysters. I ordered the one with the coconut gel, ginger, candied Yuzu rind and coriander blossom. However, it was not my favorite thing there. They have a few other oyster flavors I regret not trying instead.

Shikany also offers a small desert menu and each option looks uniquely delicious.

Overall, definitely one of the very best culinary experiences I have ever had. Unfortunately, Shikany is temporarily closed for a couple of weeks (dying), but I already know what I’m going to be trying next; I was a little disappointed they ran out of the soy compressed tuna the night I went. Apparently it’s one of the most popular dishes, so now I gotta see if it’s worth the hype. Until next bite!
