Dr. Limon: Kendall Good Eats

Sometimes a little ceviche is just what the Doctor ordered.

Dr. Limon is a little diamond in the rough, amongst a sea of pizzerias and the local Cuban food and mom-and-pop shops. It’s located inside an obscure little shopping center in Kendall. A little out of place, but it’s local and convenient for me.

I came inside and sat down with a single mission: to try their different ceviche flavors. Dr. Limon was recommended to me by a co-worker. He is Peruvian himself so I gave him some credibility about authenticity.

The tiny restaurant really plays around with the ‘doctor’ theme. The menu is cute and quirky, splitting different dishes into sections named such as, “Our colleagues recommend…, The first symptoms…, for those who feel better…” It splits what would have been a traditional menu that consisted of sections blandly named “appetizers, entrees, desserts, etc.”

They start you off with a tiny shot glass of “leche de tigre” (translated directly to tiger’s milk) which is a limey concoction and the marinade used in ceviche.

Looking at the menu there were tons of different things to try, but that day I went with their three-flavor ceviche sampler.

The three flavors were: aji amarillo (yellow pepper), classic ceviche and roasted pepper ceviche. The aji Amarillo also goes by the name of “fiebre amarilla” in their menu. It is a Peruvian yellow chili, which is creamy and spicy but a little more on the mild side. Before I even continue, I’ll tell you right now this was the winner. It was like something I had never tried before: creamy but citrusy at the same time. The light spicy kick was nice, but mostly the aji Amarillo cream had tons of flavor.

The classic ceviche was very delicious in its own right as well. We ordered a “mixed” ceviche for this type, which means it wasn’t just fish but also calamari and shrimp. Delicious and extremely fresh!

The third type was their roasted pepper fish ceviche. This one was delicious too, but when compared to the other two it takes third place. However, it was spicy and had a nice roasted flavor.

I saw they offered passion fruit cheesecake on their menu and didn’t think twice. Now, I love cheesecake. I can tell you this was delicious. It was very fresh and had a just-whipped consistency that really won me over. It had a passion fruit jelly on top, which made eating it with a spoon a bit of a challenge. And not forget to mention I particularly wasn’t a fan of the jelly itself, but the fact that the actual cheesecake was infused with passion fruit made up for it.

Overall, I’m loving this local ceviche spot. Next time I will try their different leche de tigre dishes and their jalea, which is another Peruvian dish of an assorted selection of lightly breaded and fried fish. Until next bite!
